RSS Help Page

RSS is a format for syndicating news and the content of news-like sites, including major news sites like Wired, news-oriented community sites like Slashdot, and personal weblogs. But it's not just for news. Pretty much anything that can be broken down into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS: the "recent changes" page of a wiki, a changelog of CVS checkins, even the revision history of a book. Once information about each item is in RSS format, an RSS-aware program can check the feed for changes and react to the changes in an appropriate way.

RSS-aware programs called news aggregators are popular in the weblogging community. Many weblogs make content available in RSS. A news aggregator can help you keep up with all your favorite weblogs by checking their RSS feeds and displaying new items from each of them.

Here are my recommended RSS Aggregators:

For Windows users I suggest Sharp Reader This is a simple aggregator to use and will alert you when any new changes are made.

For Mac OS/X users I recommend NetNewsWire  which works mostly like the Sharp Reader, but has a few more options.

For Linux useds I recommend Straw  I have never used this one though so I do not know much about it.

How to use your Aggregator with the MST3K Temple RSS Feed:

Download and install the program that corresponds to your OS. You will then want to open a new RSS Feed. In Sharp Reader it is under File. Then type in this address:

/rssfeed.xml

If you entered the information correct it should download all the news items that are in the FEED (3 as of 2-5-06).

FAQ:

Q. Why use an aggregator instead of just visiting the site and looking at the news?
A. RSS Feeds are becoming more and more popular on all the sites you visit. Soon you will be able to get the news from any site you visit downloaded right to your aggregator instead of visiting EVERY site to only find out two of them have updated anything.

Q. Will the news sections on this site still be updated?
A. Yes, Tom will update the news section whenever he changes something, then Rick will change the RSS Feed (Unless Tom wants to learn how hehe)

Q. I can't seem to get this to work at all. Who can I contact for help?
A. You can send an email to rschumaker01@comcast.net and I will try to help you the best I can.
